Quite often when purchasing a twin mattress, we overlook the measurements and focus only on the manufacturer and the softness or hardness of the mattress.
With so many factors to consider while buying a mattress for a twin bed, one conveniently ignores the measurements. Appropriate measurements are not only important for your sleep and comfort but also for the overall look of your room.
Someone with a small bedroom shouldn't invest in a king-size bed that will cover every inch of space, or someone with a large room should consider a larger bed than a twin. Therefore, consider all these parameters before purchasing a twin mattress.
A twin bed is commonly referred to as 'one of a pair of identical beds', used in rooms with multiple occupants.
A twin bed comes handy in houses where children or even couples may have sleeping problems or varying requirements regarding the firmness of the mattress. The bed is designed in a way that it can be stacked and conveniently turned into bunk beds, if needed.
Mattress for Twin Beds
Twin bed mattress basically comprises either an inner spring core or materials like latex, viscoelastic, or other polyurethane-type foams. It may also be stuffed with air or water, or a collection of natural fibers, like in futons.
The lifespan may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, quality of bed, and the robustness of use. However, on an average a good quality innerspring mattress has a durability of 7 to 10 years and memory foam and latex models last around 10 and 20 years.
Firmness, warranty, reputation of the manufacturer and dimensions are prime factors that one should never ignore before purchasing a twin bed mattress.
Therefore, the rule of thumb for deciding an appropriate size for any mattress is by adding six inches to your height and selecting the mattress of that length. This length buffer will ensure that you don't fall short of the mattress support while sleeping on it.
Standard Measurements for Twin Mattress
Single Twin Mattress
Single twin mattress size is 39″ x 75″, commonly used for daybeds, bunk beds or as a guest room bed. Although this measurement is fine for children or one person, adults may have a problem when it comes to length.
Extra Large Twin Mattress
Extra large (XL) twin mattress size is 39″ x 80″, i.e. 5 inches longer than the regular one, hence works best for tall people. It can be used in dorms and if combined together in pairs, it forms a king size mattress.
Extra-Extra Large Twin Mattress
Extra-extra large (XXL) twin mattress size is 39″ x 84″, i.e. 4 inches longer than the XL twin mattress, hence suits people who are extremely tall.
For a sound and restful sleep, it is important to select a mattress of proper size and one which offers maximum comfort. Before purchasing, keep in mind what are the measurements of a mattress that fits best to your requirements as this will keep you from returning the wrong size mattress to the store and shop again.
